Region Champsionships

The boys’ and girls’ track and field teams competed in the region track and field championships last night. After a long week and weekend each student athlete came out and showed a great deal of courage and strength.

When the track meet started it seemed like it was going to be a long night. It was cold, very windy, and the first races for our athletes did not look promising. All the coaches were worried about how the night would turn out. I remember standing in between the throws, pole vault, and the finish line when the night changed drastically. Sydney Brandon, a freshman, was jumping in the pole vault, Aaron Trella was throwing the discus, and our girls 4x100 was on the track about to race. Sydney was making her third attempt at clearing 8 feet (a new personal best) and she was able to clear it finishing up third in the region. I then turned and Aaron Trella was throwing the discus and on his 5th attempt he launched a throw of 131 feet (an 11 foot improvement from his best) placing him 4th in the region (while being the only underclassman in the top 8.) While he was celebrating his personal best the girls 4x100 meter sprint relay was taking place on the track. Our girls 4x100 team lost to Dorman last year at the state meet but was able to surpass them finishing 2nd with a great time for windy conditions. The highlight of the performances came soon after this with Morgan Allen in the pole vault. She was able to break not only the school record, but also the region record, in the pole vault. She won with a jump of 10 feet 6 inches which ranks her 4th in the state. At this point in the meet our student athletes began to dig deep and perform at their best for the given conditions.

We are very proud of all of our student athletes. Please congratulate and encourage all members as we are a very young team.

The boys, who only have 4 seniors on the team and have suffered many injuries to key individuals , finished the regular season with a record of 2-4 and placing 7th at the region championships.

The girls, who also only have 4 seniors on the team, finished the regular season record 4-2 and placed 3rd at the region meet losing to Dorman who is the defending 4A state champions and J.L. Mann who are the defending 3A state champions.

Look for these teams to really excel in the next few years as the student athletes mature and develop!
